Landscaping in Castle Rock, WA covers two kinds of property: town lots between the Cowlitz River and I-5, and rural acreage spread across the hills and valleys around them. Castle Rock is the northernmost city in Cowlitz County, about a mile south of where the Toutle River joins the Cowlitz, and the turnoff at I-5 Exit 49 for State Route 504 and Mount St. Helens. The river beside it is still carrying what came down the Toutle in 1980.

Bogar Landscaping drives about 30 minutes north from Woodland to work here. In town that means lawns, beds, sprinklers and drainage around homes near the Riverfront Trail and below The Rock. Out of town it means mowing big lawns, clearing brush and blackberry from fence lines, and restoring long gravel driveways.

Castle Rock: River Town, The Rock and the Road to the Mountain

Castle Rock was platted in 1888 and incorporated in 1890. It grew as a Cowlitz River steamboat port, and its sawmill was the first to make shingles from western red cedar. The town takes its name from The Rock, a volcanic outcrop about 190 feet high just south of town that served as a landmark as early as 1832. The Rock Community Park now has trails on it, and the Riverfront Trail runs along both banks of the Cowlitz.

Two kinds of property make up most of our work here:

  • In-town lots. The city had 2,446 residents in 2020, and its median house was built in 1971, so many yards have 50-year-old trees, settled patios and beds that need rebuilding.
  • Rural parcels outside town. The wider 98611 ZIP code takes in about 9,400 people, many of them on rural acreage well outside the city limits. Those properties come with large lawns, pasture edges, gravel drives, outbuildings and brush.

Silver Lake and Seaquest State Park lie east of town on State Route 504, the Spirit Lake Memorial Highway, with Toutle farther up the valley.

Toutle and Cowlitz River Sediment and Flooding in Castle Rock

When Mount St. Helens erupted in 1980, mudflows deposited upwards of 15 feet of sediment in the channels of the lower Toutle and Cowlitz rivers, and the Army Corps of Engineers began dredging that June. The sediment never stopped coming. The Corps' Toutle sediment retention structure once caught about 80 percent of the sediment moving past it and now lets about 80 percent through, and in December 2025 Castle Rock's public works director said sediment is making flood conditions worse each year.

Those December storms became federal disaster DR-4906 for Cowlitz County, covering flooding, landslides and mudslides. For Castle Rock yards, the practical lessons are simple:

  • Plan drain outlets for high river levels. Outlets near the Cowlitz have to keep flowing during a high river; otherwise the pipe fills and water backs into the lawn.
  • Keep levees and riverbanks clear of fill and debris. Check with the city or county before digging, planting or dumping anything near flood-control works.
  • Expect cleanup after big storms. Silt, limbs and washed-out bark are part of life in a river town, and we haul them off.
  • Raise what matters. Beds and patios on the lowest ground do better set a few inches above the surrounding grade.

Castle Rock Soils: Sandy River Ground and Wet Terraces

Soil samples around Castle Rock come back as a mix. The low ground near the river runs to Carrolls loamy sand, Panamaker gravelly sand and Newberg fine sandy loam, all quick to drain and quick to dry. Higher terraces carry Kelso silt loam, which holds a perched water table 2 to 3 feet down from December through March over a silty clay loam subsoil. Olequa silt loam covers some of the slopes.

That split explains why one Castle Rock property can have a soggy back corner and a lawn that browns by August. On sandy ground we add topsoil and compost before sod, and set up irrigation. On terrace silt we regrade and drain, then raise beds above the winter water. NOAA normals for Longview, down the river, record only 0.63 inches of rain in July, so summer water matters on both.

Retaining walls, grading and drainage tie-ins inside city limits go through the City of Castle Rock; rural parcels answer to Cowlitz County. Permit thresholds vary, so confirm with the right office before work is designed.

01

Landscape Design & Installation in Castle Rock, WA

Landscape Design & Installation in Castle Rock

Castle Rock designs range from a small in-town front yard to a homestead entrance on acreage. We plan around sun, wind and the river-sand or terrace-silt soil you have, then install beds, lawn, walks and drainage with one crew.

Garden Bed Design & Installation, Planting & Garden Maintenance in Castle Rock

Beds on Castle Rock's sandy river ground need compost worked in so they hold water, while terrace beds need lifting above winter wet. We prepare the soil to match, then plant shrubs and perennials suited to it.

Native Plant Landscaping & Rain Garden Installation in Castle Rock

Sword fern and cascara were once harvested around Castle Rock, and natives still suit its rural edges. We plant sword fern, Oregon grape, red-flowering currant and snowberry along drives and woodland borders, and test sandy spots for rain gardens.

New Construction Landscaping in Castle Rock

New homes on rural Castle Rock parcels often finish with raw cut banks, bare dirt and a long gravel drive. We grade, stabilize banks, bring in topsoil, and install lawn, beds and bark dust around the new house.

Landscape Lighting Installation in Castle Rock

Rural Castle Rock driveways and yards get very dark in winter. We add low-voltage lighting along walks, steps, patios and drive entrances, placed to light the path without washing out the night sky.

Mulching, Bark & Bark Dust Installation in Castle Rock

Bark dust earns its keep on Castle Rock's sandy beds, where it slows summer drying and shades out weed seedlings. A 2 to 3 inch blanket, renewed as it breaks down, also feeds the thin soil underneath.

02

Lawn Care & Lawn Renovation in Castle Rock, WA

Lawn Care & Maintenance, Lawn Mowing & Edging in Castle Rock

Castle Rock mowing runs from small town lawns to acre-plus properties. We mow and stripe large lawns, trim around outbuildings and fence lines, edge drives and walks, and adjust mowing height through dry summers.

Sod Installation, Sod Laying & Lawn Installation in Castle Rock

Sod on Castle Rock's river sand dries out quickly without good soil under it. We regrade, add topsoil, lay sod tight and set a watering plan. On wetter terrace lots, we fix drainage before the first roll goes down.

Lawn Aeration, Dethatching, Overseeding & Lawn Restoration in Castle Rock

Big Castle Rock lawns thin from August drought on sand and from compaction on silt. Core aeration once fall rain softens the ground, dethatching where thatch is thick, and overseeding the bare patches bring them back.

Lawn Moss Removal & Moss Treatment in Castle Rock

Moss in Castle Rock grows where terrace silt stays wet all winter and where tall conifers shade the lawn. We dethatch and rake it out, aerate, overseed, and address the drainage or shade that let it in.

Artificial Turf Installation & Dog Run Installation in Castle Rock

On rural Castle Rock properties, a dog run usually means a fenced gravel or turf area near the house that stays clean in winter. We build it on a compacted, drained rock base sized for your dogs.

03

Drainage, Grading & Erosion Control in Castle Rock, WA

Landscape Drainage Solutions & French Drain Installation in Castle Rock

Castle Rock drainage problems show up on the Kelso silt loam terraces, where water perches over subsoil in winter. We install French drains with drain rock, fabric and perforated pipe, planning outlets that still work when the Cowlitz is high.

Downspout Drainage & Drainage Catch Basin Installation in Castle Rock

Older Castle Rock homes often have downspouts that dump right at the foundation. We connect them to buried pipe and a catch basin, then release the water at a dispersion point or rock-lined swale well away from the house.

Yard Grading, Regrading & Landscape Erosion Control in Castle Rock

Castle Rock properties need grading for two reasons: moving water away from homes on flat lots, and holding soil on hillside acreage. We regrade, shape swales, and cover bare ground with sod, seed or mulch before the rains.

Gravel Driveway Restoration in Castle Rock

Long gravel driveways are a fact of life on rural Castle Rock land, and winter rain cuts ruts and potholes in them. We grade out the ruts, bring in crushed rock that packs tight, and cut turnouts along the edges so rain drains off instead of down the tire tracks.

04

Hardscaping, Pavers & Retaining Walls in Castle Rock, WA

Hardscaping & Paver Installation in Castle Rock

Paver patios and walkways on Castle Rock lots get a compacted crushed-rock base that suits the soil, deeper on silt and well compacted on sand. We pitch every surface away from the house and add steps or edging as needed.

Paver Patio Repair & Leveling in Castle Rock

Castle Rock patios that dropped after a wet winter or a flood usually have a base problem, so resetting pavers alone will not last. We take up the affected area, rebuild and compact the base, correct the drainage and lay the pavers again.

Retaining Wall Installation & Retaining Wall Repair in Castle Rock

Hillside parcels around Castle Rock often need a wall to level a yard, a parking spot or a garden terrace. Ours are segmental block set on compacted crushed rock, backfilled with clean rock behind fabric, with a pipe outlet and steps where you need to climb.

05

Irrigation & Sprinkler Systems in Castle Rock, WA

Irrigation & Sprinkler Installation, Drip Irrigation Installation & Conversion in Castle Rock

Sandy Castle Rock soil drains fast and dries fast, so lawns and beds need reliable summer water. We install sprinkler and drip systems zoned for lawn, beds and shade, with run times suited to fast-draining ground.

Sprinkler System Repair, Sprinkler Leak Detection & Repair in Castle Rock

Older Castle Rock systems leak at heads and valves, and some lines have been damaged by roots or frost. We find and fix the leaks, replace broken heads and adjust coverage so water lands where it should.

06

Yard Cleanup, Clearing & Invasive Plant Removal in Castle Rock, WA

Yard Cleanup & Seasonal Maintenance, Leaf Removal, Fall Cleanup & Storm Debris Cleanup in Castle Rock

After windstorms and high water, Castle Rock yards fill with limbs, silt and scattered debris. Our seasonal and storm cleanups clear lawns, beds and drives, cut back perennials, and haul everything off the property.

Overgrown Yard Cleanup & Restoration, Brush Clearing & Removal in Castle Rock

Rural Castle Rock land grows brush fast. We clear overgrown fence lines, pasture edges and abandoned gardens, and the mini excavator lifts the root balls so the ground can be mowed or replanted.

Blackberry Bush Removal & English Ivy Removal in Castle Rock

Himalayan blackberry swallows fence lines and outbuildings on Castle Rock acreage. We knock the canes down, get the root crowns out by hand or with the mini excavator, and strip English ivy from trees and walls.

Pre-Sale Landscape Cleanup in Castle Rock

Before you list a Castle Rock home or acreage, we mow and stripe lawns, clear brush and blackberry, refresh bark dust and gravel, and trim hedges so the property shows well from the road.

07

Trees, Shrubs & Hedges in Castle Rock, WA

Shrub & Hedge Trimming and Privacy Hedge Installation in Castle Rock

Arborvitae and laurel hedges around Castle Rock homes screen roads, neighbors and outbuildings. We shear them to a height and width you can live with, haul the clippings, and set out new arborvitae rows where more screening is needed.

Tree Trimming & Pruning in Castle Rock

Castle Rock properties often have large firs, cedars and maples near the house and along the drive. We prune low limbs for clearance, remove deadwood, and clean up broken limbs after storms.

Castle Rock businesses, churches and shared properties along the I-5 corridor need regular mowing, bed care and cleanup. We provide scheduled maintenance plus gravel, drainage and storm repairs.

Why Choose Us

Why Castle Rock Property Owners Call Bogar Landscaping

15 ft
1980 sediment in the channels

We Know River-Sediment Ground

The 1980 mudflows left up to 15 feet of sediment in the lower Toutle and Cowlitz channels, according to USGS, and Castle Rock still lives with that river. We read the soil on your lot, sandy and fast-draining or wet and perched, and prepare it accordingly before sod, beds or drains go in.

FAQ

Castle Rock Landscaping FAQs

Do you work outside Castle Rock city limits?

Yes. We work on rural properties around Castle Rock as well as in town. For properties farther up State Route 504 toward Silver Lake and Toutle, call and tell us about the job, and we will let you know. We also cover Lexington to the south.

Why does my Castle Rock yard flood in one spot and dry out in another?

Castle Rock sits on a mix of soils. Sandy river deposits drain fast and dry out in summer, while Kelso silt loam on the terraces holds water 2 to 3 feet down in winter. We test the problem areas and match the fix: drainage for wet spots, soil and irrigation for dry ones.

Does a wall or drain project in Castle Rock need city approval?

It depends on the size of the project and where you are. Inside city limits, check with the City of Castle Rock; on rural parcels, check with Cowlitz County. Work near levees may have extra rules. 811 locates are requested before any excavation.

How long does it take you to reach Castle Rock?

About 30 minutes north from Woodland on I-5 to Exit 49, which puts Castle Rock at the north end of the I-5 corridor we cover. Calls are answered any hour, and estimates are free.
