Good landscaping in Kalama, WA is mostly about gravity. The town sits on a narrow floodplain along the Columbia, and its residential areas climb the hill to the east and the cliffs above town, parts of which have sweeping views over the river. Almost every view comes with a slope, and almost every slope comes with water moving through it in winter.

Our Woodland base is one short hop down I-5, about 10 minutes, so Kalama jobs get the same attention as the ones next door. We build terraced retaining walls, slope drainage, patios set where the view is, and planting plans that frame the river instead of hiding it. Call (360) 555-0142 any hour.

Kalama's Hillside Lots Above the Columbia

Kalama is a small city, about 3,170 people in the state's April 2026 estimate, but it covers a lot of vertical ground. The Port of Kalama and industrial sites hold the riverfront, the business district sits on the east side of I-5, and the Kalama River meets the Columbia just outside the city limits. Three I-5 exits, 27, 30 and 32, serve the town.

Up the hill, Craftsman and mid-century houses share the slopes with view homes off roads such as Green Mountain Road and Varsity Road, and rural places spread up Kalama River Road. History runs deep here: St. Joseph's Catholic Parish was built in 1874, the Montgomery House in 1908, and Kalama served as the Cowlitz County seat from 1872 to 1922.

That mix means two kinds of hillside jobs:

  • Older homes: deciding which old walls, steps and shrubs to keep and which to rebuild.
  • View homes: usable flat space, a slope that stays put, and nothing growing into the sightline.

Basalt, Clay Subsoil and Perched Water: What Is Under a Kalama Slope

USDA soil maps of the Kalama hillsides show Schneider-Rock outcrop complex on 15 to 65 percent slopes, with basalt bedrock 40 to more than 60 inches down. Around it are Olympic silt loam, a well-drained soil with a reddish clay subsoil weathered from basalt, plus Mart, Hazeldell and Sara silt loams. The Kalama soil series, described from this area, carries a perched water table 2.5 to 5 feet down from December through March.

In practice that means:

  • Rock close to the surface on the steepest lots, so wall footings and planting holes can hit stone.
  • Water moving sideways in winter along the clay subsoil, coming out as seeps on cut banks and wet faces on old walls.
  • More rain the higher you go. The NOAA station at Kalama Falls Hatchery, about 5 miles up the valley, averages 67.81 inches a year, against 48.12 inches at Longview on the river. Where your lot sits between those two shapes how much water the slope has to handle.

The region has seen what saturated hillsides can do: the Aldercrest-Banyon slide in Kelso began moving in 1998 after years of above-average rain and cost more than $70 million. That is why water is the first design question on any Kalama hillside.

Keeping the River View: Walls, Planting and Lighting on Kalama View Lots

A view lot is designed from the window out. Our approach on Kalama hillsides:

  1. Terrace instead of one tall wall. Two or three shorter segmental block walls with planting shelves between them drain more easily and look lighter from below. Closely spaced terraces load each other, so spacing, engineering and permits get checked with the City of Kalama or Cowlitz County on every job.
  2. Drain every retaining wall. Pipe, rock and fabric behind the block, and an outlet that does not dump onto the slope below.
  3. Plant low on the downhill side. Kinnikinnick, salal, low Oregon grape and dwarf conifers stay under eye level at maturity. Taller trees go to the sides to frame the river.
  4. Prune for the view, do not top. Limbing up and selective thinning keep the river in sight for years.
  5. Light the path, not the sky. Shielded path and step lights and soft uplighting on one feature tree, so the river and the Oregon shore stay visible at night. See landscape lighting.
  6. Put the patio where the view is. A paver or gravel patio cut into the slope with a seat wall, like the fire pit patio with a valley view in our photos, gives you a flat place to sit and look out.

01

Landscape Design & Installation in Kalama, WA

Landscape Design & Installation in Kalama

Kalama designs start at the window: what you see from inside, where the river sits, and how the slope steps down from the house. We plan terraces, a usable patio level and low planting on the view side.

Garden Bed Design & Installation, Planting & Garden Maintenance in Kalama

Hillside beds in Kalama sit between walls or on terraces, often in thin soil over basalt. We bring in planting soil, choose shrubs that stay low on the view side, and edge and mulch so winter rain does not wash the bed onto the patio.

Native Plant Landscaping & Rain Garden Installation in Kalama

Native groundcovers like kinnikinnick, salal and low Oregon grape hold Kalama slopes and stay below the sightline. On steep lots a rain garden can saturate the hillside, so we keep those to the flatter river-level yards near downtown.

New Construction Landscaping in Kalama

New homes on Kalama hillsides finish with raw cut-and-fill banks and a lot of exposed subsoil. We stabilize the banks, add soil where the builder left clay or rock, and install walls, drainage, beds and lawn in the right order.

Landscape Lighting Installation in Kalama

Lighting on a Kalama view lot should never compete with the river at night. We pair shielded path and step fixtures with gentle uplighting on one or two trees, in warm color on a timer, and keep glare out of the view windows.

Mulching, Bark & Bark Dust Installation in Kalama

Bark dust on a slope wanders unless it is edged and laid on the right grade. On Kalama terraces we keep it 2 to 3 inches deep and set steel edging where beds meet patios so rain does not carry it across the pavers.

02

Lawn Care & Lawn Renovation in Kalama, WA

Lawn Care & Maintenance, Lawn Mowing & Edging in Kalama

Mowing Kalama hillsides takes care on the steep pitches and around walls and steps. We mow, edge and string-trim terraced lawns on a regular schedule and flag soft spots or seeps that point to a drainage problem.

Sod Installation, Sod Laying & Lawn Installation in Kalama

On Kalama terraces, sod gives instant cover where seed would wash out. We grade each level to drain toward a collection point, add soil over the clay subsoil, and lay and roll the sod, pinning it on the steeper edges.

Lawn Aeration, Dethatching, Overseeding & Lawn Restoration in Kalama

Terraced lawns in Kalama pack down along the walking routes and stay wet near the uphill wall. We core aerate in spring or early fall and overseed thin spots, using shade-tolerant fescues near the big firs.

Lawn Moss Removal & Moss Treatment in Kalama

North-facing and shaded Kalama slopes grow moss on lawns, steps and wall caps. We dethatch it mechanically, thin branches for light, fix the seep that keeps the soil wet, and overseed or switch hopeless patches to groundcover.

Artificial Turf Installation & Dog Run Installation in Kalama

A flat terrace finished in artificial turf gives a dog a clean spot on a lot with no level lawn. We build it on a compacted, draining base behind a short wall so it stays put and sheds water.

03

Drainage, Grading & Erosion Control in Kalama, WA

Landscape Drainage Solutions & French Drain Installation in Kalama

Kalama hillsides move water sideways over the clay subsoil, so drains belong uphill of the house and behind walls. Pipe, rock and fabric intercept the flow, and the line runs to a stable outlet, never onto the slope below.

Downspout Drainage & Drainage Catch Basin Installation in Kalama

Downspouts on a hillside home need to reach a stable outlet in solid pipe, not splash onto the bank. We add catch basins on patios and drives and tie everything into a discharge point that will not erode the slope.

Yard Grading, Regrading & Landscape Erosion Control in Kalama

With slopes of 15 to 65 percent, erosion control never really ends in Kalama. We regrade so water stops sheeting down the hill, cover bare cuts with mulch, blanket or planting, and get banks stabilized ahead of the November rains.

Gravel Driveway Restoration in Kalama

Steep gravel drives off Kalama River Road and the hill roads lose rock to every storm. We regrade, add water bars or a ditch to turn runoff off the drive, and resurface with compacted crushed rock that locks together.

04

Hardscaping, Pavers & Retaining Walls in Kalama, WA

Hardscaping & Paver Installation in Kalama

A paver patio on a Kalama slope is usually a cut-and-wall job: we excavate a level, build a block wall behind or below it, compact the base in layers and set the pavers.

Paver Patio Repair & Leveling in Kalama

Older Kalama patios and walks often heave where tree roots run under them or crack where a footing shifted. We lift and reset the pavers, rebuild the base, and replace broken edging and loose caps on attached seat walls.

Retaining Wall Installation & Retaining Wall Repair in Kalama

On a Kalama view lot, most of the budget and most of the engineering go into the walls. We build segmental block walls and built-in steps with perforated drain pipe, drain rock and filter fabric behind them, terrace tall grade changes, and confirm permits with the city or county.

05

Irrigation & Sprinkler Systems in Kalama, WA

Irrigation & Sprinkler Installation, Drip Irrigation Installation & Conversion in Kalama

Hillside irrigation has to apply water no faster than the slope can take it. We use drip on terraces and beds, low-rate heads on sloped lawn, and separate zones for each level so the bottom terrace does not flood.

Sprinkler System Repair, Sprinkler Leak Detection & Repair in Kalama

Leaks on a slope show up downhill from where they start, as soggy spots or a wet wall face. We trace the line, repair heads, pipe and valves, and winterize Kalama systems before the first hard freeze in early November.

06

Yard Cleanup, Clearing & Invasive Plant Removal in Kalama, WA

Yard Cleanup & Seasonal Maintenance, Leaf Removal, Fall Cleanup & Storm Debris Cleanup in Kalama

Leaves and needles pile up against Kalama walls and steps and clog drain grates and catch basins. Fall cleanups clear the terraces, beds and drains, and after windstorms we haul off downed limbs and storm debris.

Overgrown Yard Cleanup & Restoration, Brush Clearing & Removal in Kalama

Hillside lots in Kalama that went untended for a few years end up under brush, volunteer alder and maple, and blackberry down the bank. We clear by hand on steep ground and with a mini excavator where it can work safely.

Blackberry Bush Removal & English Ivy Removal in Kalama

Blackberry and English ivy love the steep, unused banks below Kalama view homes, and ivy climbs into the firs. Blackberry crowns get dug, ivy vines get severed on the trunks and pulled down, and the bank gets replanted so it holds.

Pre-Sale Landscape Cleanup in Kalama

On a Kalama view home, the view is the selling point. Before listing we prune to open sightlines, clean up terraces and beds, refresh bark dust, mow and edge, and fix obvious wall or drainage issues.

07

Trees, Shrubs & Hedges in Kalama, WA

Shrub & Hedge Trimming and Privacy Hedge Installation in Kalama

Privacy on a Kalama hillside usually has to come from the sides, since the front faces the river. We trim existing hedges below view height and plant arborvitae or native screens along side lines where neighbors sit close.

Tree Trimming & Pruning in Kalama

On Kalama hillsides, tree work is mostly about the view. We limb up and selectively thin firs and maples to open the river, remove deadwood over roofs, and avoid topping, which only creates weak regrowth.

Pipe + Rock
Behind every wall

Built for Water Moving Downhill

Our block wall photos show the parts that matter on a Kalama slope: perforated drain pipe at the base, drain rock wrapped in filter fabric against the back of the block, and capstones set last. That drainage relieves the water pressure that tips walls on clay subsoil. We also call 811 before any excavation.

1 Crew
Wall to light fixture

One Crew for a Layered Hillside Job

A Kalama view yard goes in by layers: drainage, walls, steps, patio, soil, plants, irrigation, lighting. We handle each layer ourselves, so the drain lines are in before the wall goes up and the lighting wire is in before the bark goes down.

FAQ

Landscaping in Kalama, WA: FAQs

Can you build retaining walls and terraces on a steep Kalama lot?

Yes. Segmental block with drain pipe, rock and fabric behind it is our standard, and big grade changes get split into several shorter walls. Washington's residential code exempts walls up to 4 feet from the bottom of the footing that carry no extra load, but taller or loaded walls need a permit and engineering. We confirm the current rule with the City of Kalama or Cowlitz County first.

What can we plant that won't block our river view?

Low natives like kinnikinnick, salal and low Oregon grape on the downhill side, compact shrubs and dwarf conifers that top out below the deck rail, and taller trees placed at the sides to frame the view. We plan for mature height, not the size in the nursery pot.

Do you work outside town, up Kalama River Road and on the hill roads?

Yes. We cover the city of Kalama and the rural land around it, including Kalama River Road, Green Mountain Road and the hillsides above the Columbia. We also work farther up I-5 in Kelso and Longview.

Why does water come out of my Kalama slope every winter?

Many Kalama soils have a clay subsoil, and the Kalama series carries a perched water table 2.5 to 5 feet down from December through March. Water travels sideways along that layer and surfaces as seeps on cut banks and behind walls. A drain line that intercepts it uphill is usually the fix, not more fill.
