If you are shopping for landscaping in Ridgefield, WA, odds are your house is newer than your yard plan. Ridgefield was the fastest-growing city in Washington from 2014 to 2024, climbing from 6,175 to 15,790 residents, and the median Ridgefield home was built in 2012. That means a lot of yards only a few years old, laid over construction fill, with thin sod out front and a backyard that holds water from November to April.

Bogar Landscaping works out of Woodland, about 15 minutes north on I-5. We take Ridgefield yards from bare or tired to finished: regrading, drainage, sod, paver patios, block walls, lighting and planting, then weekly care if you want it. Ring (360) 555-0142 day or night to get a free estimate on the calendar.

Ridgefield Soils: Gee Clay on the Hillsides, Sauvie Silt Toward Lake River

Sample the USDA soil survey across Ridgefield and the same few soils keep showing up. On the ridge and its slopes it is mostly Gee silt loam, mapped on ground from nearly flat to 60 percent. Gee was first described in a Clark County clay pit, and its subsoil runs 18 to 35 percent clay with very slow permeability down low. Toward Lake River and the refuge the map turns to Sauvie silt loam, a poorly drained floodplain soil, and terrace pockets of Sara silt loam hold a perched water table 1 to 2 feet down from December through April.

What that means in your yard:

  • Winter rain stalls a few inches down. Water soaks the topsoil, meets the clay and stops, so backyards go spongy and mossy by January.
  • Construction made it worse. Equipment presses the subsoil flat, then a skim of topsoil and sod goes on top. Roots stay shallow and the lawn browns by mid-July.
  • Hillsides move water fast. Runoff from the lot above cuts channels through beds and washes silt across patios.

So every Ridgefield job runs in the same order: break up the compacted layer, give the surface real fall toward an outlet, and add French drains and drain lines in Ridgefield where water has nowhere else to go. Sod and pavers come after.

Small Post-2010 Lots, Older Large Lots and Sloping Estate Lots

Some 59 percent of Ridgefield's housing went up in 2010 or later, and the Spokesman-Review noted that post-recession houses sit closer together than the big-lot homes of the early 2000s. Listings show the spread: Pioneer Canyon from the early 2010s, new plans in Ridgefield Heights and Quail Ridge, and an estate-lot phase at Taverner Ridge with flat and sloping lots.

Lot type Typical condition Typical upgrade
Post-2010 subdivision lot Thin sod on compacted fill, narrow side yards, fence on three sides Regraded lawn, paver patio, privacy planting, drip on beds
Early-2000s larger lot Mature but tired lawn, overgrown shrubs, aging sprinkler heads Lawn renovation, bed redesign, irrigation update, lighting
Sloping estate or view lot Grade drop between house and yard, runoff, slope you cannot use Block retaining walls with drain rock, terraces, steps, a patio on the flat

Many Ridgefield neighborhoods have HOAs with rules on front lawns, fences and hardscape. Hand us the guidelines at the estimate and we will draw the plan to fit them.

Landscaping in Ridgefield, WA Near the Wildlife Refuge and Lake River

Ridgefield's calling card is the Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge, roughly 5,228 acres of Columbia River bottomland with the Carty Unit trail and the River S auto tour. Many homes look down on Lake River, and that setting shapes how we approach landscaping in Ridgefield, WA:

  • Native shrubs on the slopes. Red-flowering currant, Oregon grape, snowberry and sword fern hold a Gee hillside on far less water than lawn, and they feed birds.
  • Rain gardens only with a backup. Clark County's stormwater guidance puts Gee and Sara in its poorly drained soil group, rated not suitable for infiltration, so a Ridgefield rain garden needs an overflow or underdrain.
  • Water stays on your lot. We route downspouts and drain lines to a dispersion trench, rain garden or approved outlet on your property, not onto the neighbor's yard or over the bluff.

Brush and clippings get hauled away, since burning yard debris is prohibited inside city limits.

01

Landscape Design & Installation in Ridgefield, WA

Landscape Design & Installation in Ridgefield

Many Ridgefield homes came with a builder package: a front lawn, a few shrubs and a strip of bark. We design the whole yard around how you use it, then install it with plants picked for clay that stays wet all winter and dry by August.

Garden Bed Design & Installation, Planting & Garden Maintenance in Ridgefield

Builder beds in Ridgefield are often two inches of bark over compacted fill. We excavate the fill, blend in compost and replant with shrubs that tolerate wet clay, and we can keep them weeded, pruned and topped up on a maintenance schedule.

Native Plant Landscaping & Rain Garden Installation in Ridgefield

Living beside a wildlife refuge, many Ridgefield homeowners want a yard that supports birds and pollinators. We plant native shrubs and groundcovers on slopes, and build rain gardens with an overflow because Gee and Sara soils drain too slowly for a basic one.

New Construction Landscaping in Ridgefield

More than half of Ridgefield's homes date from 2010 or later, so many yards here are still the builder's first pass. We clear leftover construction debris, rip the compacted fill and spread topsoil, then lay sod and build beds with bark and sprinklers as a single project.

Landscape Lighting Installation in Ridgefield

Estate lots at Taverner Ridge and homes above Lake River show best with the yard lit after dark. We install low-voltage path, step and patio lighting, running wire before sod or pavers go down so nothing gets torn up later.

Mulching, Bark & Bark Dust Installation in Ridgefield

Fresh bark dust is the fastest front-yard refresh before a Ridgefield HOA inspection or a listing. We edge the beds, pull weeds and spread fir or hemlock bark at an even depth, keeping it pulled back from new siding and foundation vents.

02

Lawn Care & Lawn Renovation in Ridgefield, WA

Lawn Care & Maintenance, Lawn Mowing & Edging in Ridgefield

Small Ridgefield lots mean tight gates, narrow side yards and HOA standards for the front lawn. Weekly or every-other-week visits cover mowing, edging, trimming and blow-off, with the deck set high once the clay dries in July.

Sod Installation, Sod Laying & Lawn Installation in Ridgefield

Sod rolled straight over Ridgefield's compacted fill browns out the first summer and puddles the first winter. We rip the subsoil, add fresh topsoil, shape the grade toward an outlet and lay sod in spring or early fall when it roots fastest.

Lawn Aeration, Dethatching, Overseeding & Lawn Restoration in Ridgefield

Core aeration pays off on Ridgefield's builder lawns, which sit on pressed-down clay. We core when the ground is damp but not saturated, dethatch where moss has crept in, and overseed with perennial ryegrass and fine fescue in spring or early fall.

Lawn Moss Removal & Moss Treatment in Ridgefield

North-facing backyards behind six-foot fences in Ridgefield's tighter subdivisions stay shaded and wet all winter, which is where moss wins. We rake and dethatch it out, aerate, fix the drainage and shade causes, and overseed so grass can compete.

Artificial Turf Installation & Dog Run Installation in Ridgefield

On a compact Ridgefield lot, the dog's track along the fence turns to mud by November. We build turf or gravel dog runs on a compacted, drained base so urine and rain pass through instead of sitting on the clay underneath.

03

Drainage, Grading & Erosion Control in Ridgefield, WA

Landscape Drainage Solutions & French Drain Installation in Ridgefield

Sara soils on Ridgefield's terraces hold a perched water table 1 to 2 feet down from December to April. Our French drains set perforated pipe in drain rock and filter fabric, in a sloped trench that empties at a legal outlet within your property.

Downspout Drainage & Drainage Catch Basin Installation in Ridgefield

A downspout emptying at the foundation of a Ridgefield house dumps winter rain onto clay that is already full. We pipe it to a catch basin, dry creek bed or dispersion trench, and reset the gravel around catch basins.

Yard Grading, Regrading & Landscape Erosion Control in Ridgefield

Gee silt loam on Ridgefield's hillsides is mapped on slopes up to 60 percent. When the lot above sheds water onto yours, we regrade swales, stabilize bare banks with plantings and erosion matting, and rebuild washed-out beds so the soil stays put.

Gravel Driveway Restoration in Ridgefield

Rural parcels on Ridgefield's edges, out toward Duluth and the county roads, still run on gravel. We regrade potholed drives, rebuild the crown so rain runs off both edges, and resurface with new crushed rock, including the worn shoulders along asphalt.

04

Hardscaping, Pavers & Retaining Walls in Ridgefield, WA

Hardscaping & Paver Installation in Ridgefield

A paver patio is often the first big upgrade on a Ridgefield new-build backyard. On clay we dig deeper, compact the base in layers and pitch the patio away from the house, then cut curves on site to follow the lawn and bed lines.

Paver Patio Repair & Leveling in Ridgefield

Pavers over Ridgefield clay sink and heave if the base is too thin or water gets beneath it. We lift the low section, rebuild the base in compacted lifts, relay the pavers with fresh joint sand, and fix the downspout or grade problem behind the dip.

Retaining Wall Installation & Retaining Wall Repair in Ridgefield

Sloping lots at Taverner Ridge and along the ridge above Lake River often need a wall before the yard is usable. Our segmental block walls are backed by drain rock, perforated pipe and filter fabric, with built-in steps where the grade drops.

05

Irrigation & Sprinkler Systems in Ridgefield, WA

Irrigation & Sprinkler Installation, Drip Irrigation Installation & Conversion in Ridgefield

July and August are nearly rainless in Clark County, and the thin topsoil on Ridgefield builder lots holds little water. We put in zoned sprinkler systems for lawns, convert beds to drip, and lay the lines before sod and pavers on new-build yards.

Sprinkler System Repair, Sprinkler Leak Detection & Repair in Ridgefield

Ridgefield systems are young, but heads sink as new sod settles and fence or patio crews nick the lines. We track down the leak or dead zone, replace heads and valves, and reset coverage so the corners stop browning.

06

Yard Cleanup, Clearing & Invasive Plant Removal in Ridgefield, WA

Yard Cleanup & Seasonal Maintenance, Leaf Removal, Fall Cleanup & Storm Debris Cleanup in Ridgefield

Ridgefield's wooded hillsides and the older streets near downtown drop a heavy load of leaves and needles each fall. We handle fall leaf removal, spring cleanups and storm debris cleanup, and haul it all away.

Overgrown Yard Cleanup & Restoration, Brush Clearing & Removal in Ridgefield

Lots that sat empty while Ridgefield's subdivisions filled in grow head-high brush fast. Hand crews cut it down, the mini excavator pulls roots and stumps, and we grade the ground for lawn, beds or a shop pad.

Blackberry Bush Removal & English Ivy Removal in Ridgefield

Himalayan blackberry moves in fast on Ridgefield's ravine edges and along back fences that border open ground. Canes get cut back, root crowns get dug out so they cannot resprout, English ivy comes off fences and trunks, and the cleared strip gets replanted.

Pre-Sale Landscape Cleanup in Ridgefield

With nearly half of recent Ridgefield listings being new construction, buyers compare your yard with brand-new ones. Before photos, we mow and stripe the lawn, edge, refresh bark dust, shape shrubs and clean up beds so a resale holds its own.

07

Trees, Shrubs & Hedges in Ridgefield, WA

Shrub & Hedge Trimming and Privacy Hedge Installation in Ridgefield

Houses set close together make privacy a priority in Ridgefield's newer neighborhoods. We plant arborvitae rows along fence lines, as in our project photos, and keep laurel and boxwood trimmed square, clippings cleaned up before we leave.

Tree Trimming & Pruning in Ridgefield

Douglas fir, western redcedar and red alder on Ridgefield's wooded slopes reach over newer yards. We prune for clearance over roofs, fences and lawns and thin crowns to let light reach the grass, sizing every cut to the tree instead of topping it.

08

Commercial Landscaping in Ridgefield, WA

Commercial Landscaping & Maintenance in Ridgefield

Ridgefield's growth has added retail near the I-5 interchanges, including the Costco that opened in 2024, plus HOA common areas and entry plantings in the newer subdivisions. Our commercial landscape maintenance and HOA landscaping keep those spaces mowed, mulched and clean year round.

Built for Clay and Buried Lines

New subdivisions are full of buried utilities, and Washington's dig law calls for a locate request no less than two full business days ahead of any excavation. We request one before any grading, drain or wall job, then dig the clay properly: drain rock, perforated pipe and fabric behind walls, and a real slope under lawns.

1 Crew
Grade to finished yard

One Crew for the Whole Lot

A typical Ridgefield new-build yard needs grading, a drain line, sod, beds, maybe a patio and a short wall. We handle all of those trades ourselves, so you are not juggling an excavator, a hardscaper and a mowing service. The same crew can keep the lawn striped afterward.

Our Work, Before & After

Before and After: New-Build Yards, Walls and Drainage

Every photo here comes from one of our own jobs. Together they show the methods we bring to Ridgefield lots: regraded soil before sod, drain rock behind block walls and arborvitae privacy rows.

Moss-Choked Backyard to New Sod Lawn

Water sat on this yard all winter and moss took over. We dethatched, regraded the yard so runoff moves away from the patio, brought in fresh soil and laid new sod.

A stand of tall cane growth had swallowed this backyard. We cut it down, pulled the roots with a mini excavator, then finished the space with sod, a planting bed and a row of arborvitae for privacy.

FAQ

Landscaping in Ridgefield: Common Questions

Do you work in Ridgefield neighborhoods east of I-5 and out in the county?

Yes. We offer landscaping in Ridgefield, WA across the whole 98642 area: the older blocks around downtown, the bluff above Lake River, the subdivisions east of the freeway in the Ridgefield Junction area, and rural acreage out toward Duluth. From Woodland it is about 15 minutes down I-5 to Exit 14.

Do I need a permit for a retaining wall in Ridgefield?

Under the state residential code, a wall no more than 4 feet tall, measured from the footing's base, with nothing loading it from above, is generally exempt. Taller or surcharged walls need a permit and usually an engineer. The City of Ridgefield issues its own permits, so we confirm the rule there first. See our Ridgefield retaining wall page.

My new Ridgefield lawn is soggy every winter. Is the builder's sod bad?

Usually the problem is the ground under it. Gee and Sara soils have tight clay subsoils, and construction traffic compacts them further, so rain stops a few inches down. We loosen the compacted layer, regrade toward an outlet, add a drain line where needed and then re-sod.

Can you design around my Ridgefield HOA's landscaping rules?

Yes. Many Ridgefield subdivisions have an HOA with rules on front lawns, street trees, fence heights and hardscape materials. Have the guidelines handy at the estimate and we will draw the plan and plant list to match, then build to whatever the committee approves.
