If you need retaining wall installation in La Center, WA, you are probably looking at a lot that falls away from the house or a bank that has started to move. A wall holds soil, but what decides whether it lasts is the water behind it, and around La Center there is plenty of it. We build the drainage into every wall, and we rebuild older ones that never had it.

Retaining Walls in La Center, WA: Hillside Lots and the 4-Foot Line

The old town sits near river level, at an elevation of roughly 52 feet, but newer neighborhoods such as Southview Heights and Stephens Hillside Farm carry names that hint at rising ground, and a lot that steps down often needs a wall to make a usable yard.

Soil adds to the load. Clark County's terrace soils include the Gee series, moderately well drained on terraces and escarpments, with permeability grading to very slow in the lower subsoil. Water tends to stop at that layer and push sideways on anything built across the slope. That is a county series, not a map of your lot.

Then there are the rules. On unincorporated land, Clark County asks for a permit once a wall passes 4 feet from the footing's base, and for any wall holding back a slope, driveway or footings regardless of height. Permitted walls need a design from a Washington registered engineer. La Center is a city with its own code, including a critical lands chapter that addresses geologically hazardous areas. We could not confirm the city's wall threshold, so confirm it with the city before building.

Finally, the walls that came with 1990s homes are now 25 years old or more. A lean, a bulge or mud weeping from the base usually means water has been pushing on them.

What We Build and Repair

Our retaining wall page covers block walls, caps and built-in steps. Here we pair walls with a paver landing, as described on our paver page for La Center, and with an outlet planned through French drain installation. Failed walls are rebuilt with the drainage they should have had.

How We Build a Wall on a Sloped Lot

  1. Call 811 and mark the line before any cut into the bank.
  2. Dig a level trench and compact a crushed rock base.
  3. Set the first course dead level, since every course above follows it.
  4. Line the back with fabric, then add drain rock and perforated pipe, as in the wall photos on our site.
  5. Backfill in lifts, compact, and send the pipe to a daylight outlet.
  6. Cap and finish, with steps built into the wall where the levels meet.

Cost Factors

A regional guide put interlocking block walls in the Vancouver area at $22 to $41 per face square foot (December 2022). That is a third-party figure, not our price. Height, slope access, soil and permit needs change it.

Hazard Areas Checked Before We Cut a Bank

La Center's code includes a critical lands chapter covering geologically hazardous areas, floodplains and riparian zones. Before we cut into a bank near the river or a creek, we ask the city whether review applies. The 4-foot permit line is a separate question that we also confirm.

Drainage Behind Every Wall

Our wall photos show filter fabric, clean rock and a perforated pipe going in behind the block. That is how we build, because trapped water is what makes walls lean. The pipe gets a real outlet so it does not just fill up.

A Look at the Wall in January Rain

A wall tells you the most during a wet January, when seepage shows. La Center is close to our Woodland base, so we can see an existing wall then. Our phone is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

We built this segmental block wall with perforated drain pipe, drain rock and filter fabric behind it, so water drains instead of pushing on the wall. Built-in steps lead down to a new paver landing.

FAQ

Retaining Walls in La Center, WA: Common Questions

Does building near the river or a creek mean extra review?

Possibly. La Center's critical lands chapter covers floodplains, riparian zones and geologically hazardous areas, and Clark County sets stream buffers from 75 to 250 feet on unincorporated land. We could not confirm how these apply to your parcel, so ask the city's planning staff before cutting a bank near water.

Can you repair a 1990s wall that is leaning?

Sometimes. A small bulge can be reset course by course. A lean usually points to water behind the wall, which means digging out the backfill, adding drainage and rebuilding. We tell you which it is on the site visit.
